Werewolves, she mouthed. They have Coran. Apparently this mage rival of yours wanted to lure you into a trap. But the werewolf leader has some sort of personal issue with Coran.

And did the mage try to bribe you, my "dear"? Adrian mouthed back. His time with Safana was a dim and distant memory, but he remembered her well enough. Viconia was clutching his arm possesively and glaring at Safana out of her red eyes as though she were the murder child rather than her lover.

Perhaps he would have. We came later. And your next question, would I have accepted? Perhaps. Once. But Coran..... she shook her head.

The leader of the wolves had a long claw to Coran's neck. The theif looked much as Adrian remembered him. Though he doubted the rogue was having much of an adventure just at the moment. He looked at them briefly, then Safana longer, but kept staring up at the werewolf that had him.

To Adrian, these seemed larger, taller than any other Werewolves he had seen before. Taller and bulkier, more feral somehow, if such a thing was possible. Hairier.

"True Lycanthropes," said Tree into his thoughts. "Generation upon generation of werewolves, a clan that has grown strong in their strangeness."

"Mutants," Edwin muttered.

"Silence your prattle!" The She-wolf cheftain howled at them, her accent barely understandable. "Coran walked with me once before, though I wore my human form then, and if I can't have him, no one can!"

"Edwin," Adrian barely whispered.

The Thayvian did not even bother to nod. He twitched his fingers and muttered softly, as Safana and Tree talked to the Werebeast. She rattled on about her tribe and how they wanted Coran's "fresh blood" to mingle with theirs, and so on, and so on, until Edwin's spell was cast.

For everyone else, it seemed as no time passed. But for Edwin, the world faded to gray, and everyone else was motionless.

He had no love for the Elven rogue, but all the allies they could get....ah well. He supposed he should be happy that Adrian wasn't trying to kill everything in their path.

First the ever reliable magic missle. Then a pair of chromatic orbs. The spell was beginning to fade, so he cast haste upon himself, raced towards the halpless rogue, and with the last second left available to him, shoved Coran away from the claws of his would-be paramour. The spells slammed into the Werebeast.

As Edwin dragged Coran away, Safana's bow twanged, Imoen's own spellcraft attack exploded, and Zavrian charged in.

The Archwerebeast was hard to fell, but she was stunned. Zavrian closed with her, the other warriors of the party not far behind. After she went down, the other bests swarmed the party. It was rough, but not impossible.

Coran recovered enough to draw his blade and charge into the fray. He actually held his own weight, too. Adrian was impressed.

----

Safana cuddled Coran afterwards.

"You can't possibly love him," Viconia said dryly.

"No, but he loves me....and that's enough." Safana sighed. She had changed, some. Still a lavicious vixen, to be sure, but softer, sadder, wiser.

"Come, you two," Zavrian said. "It's not o'er yet. We still have to get back to town, and that is not the end of Adrian's quest."

"Besides," Viconia added, "We have to bind Adrian's power tonight..."

Mmmm...Time Stop... love that spell. I think perhaps my favorite use of it is on dragons, making them drop dead on the spot with a few Horrid Wiltings. *smiles at fond memories*
Rogues do it from behind.

Oh, I remember, too. I quite liked this part, actually.

*snicker* Gods, ain't she stupid...

Um, wait. *Magic Missile* - inside of a *Time Stop*?

Liked the "softer and sadder" Safana.
