Firebead Elvenhair sits facing the fireplace. His mouth is covered by his gnarled hands and his eyes stare darkly into the fire, narrowed, focused, as if the flames had done something they would not live to regret.

Phoenix remains still, watching him, studying every line on his face, wishing that she could look that impressive, that imposing. She will attempt to master that scowl later. When she is older, that scowl will be turned on disobediant apprentices.

"Hello, Phoenix." He said, not even looking up. "Sit by the fire and endulge an old man a moment. How goes your schooling?" She obeys, sitting up straight in a chair across from him. When she had been younger, she would have blurted out everything, but she is so much older now, and she wants to impress him with her manners.

"Well, Gorion has taught me the sleep spell." She says, frowning slightly. "It will be useful to me later, I suppose. I really would like to study necromancy, and have just learned the spell Larlock's minor drain. I intend to try that out on some rats."

Firebead's lips curl into an enigmatic smile. "Oh, I'm certain you will find some rats to try that spell on soon enough." He says, then mutters something about how the world seems full of rats lately.

"Oh, I know right where they are. In fact I have a certain dwarf, Reever, paying me for their removal." She hopes he will appreciate how nice and neat her plan is. The proverbial killing two birds with one stone: or as she liked to think of it, killing a bird and raising its corpse to kill its brethren.

"Is that so?" He smiles again, though the edges of his eyes are still saddened. "Ah, to see the world through young eyes again." He sighs.

"I'd better do that tonight because Gorion is taking me to meet some of his old friends at the Friendly Arms Inn. I don't want to leave the man with a rat problem for two weeks or so." She says. She tries to ask it casually, "Will you be back when I come back?"

"Oh, the world is full of uncertainties, child." He says, looking into her dark eyes.

"So it is." She sighs. "There are a few things you can be certain of. Imoen will always steal my quill or bump my elbow when I'm working on a very important spell. Winthrope will always threaten to grossly overcharge me for a room even though he knows I have my own room and have no use for his. Then he'll accuse me of having no sense of humor." She scowls. "Those things are as certain as the sun rising."

He laughs. "At this point in your life, perhaps. Could you do something for an old man before you go?" He asks.

"Certainly." She owes him any favor he asks. He has tutored her on the basic gestures and components of spells, he has provided her with enough information on the fundimentals of certain spells that she could develop a number of household cantrips just using information he provided. That has saved her hundreds of hours of labor over the years. He never asked her or Gorion to pay him for his time, but Phoenix remembers her debts. When she is a powerful mage, she will make sure that he is well paid, but right now, she can make sure he is pleased with any work she does for him.

"I would like you to get back my identify scroll from Tethtoril." He answers.

"As good as done. I need to give him back his robes anyway." She replies. She has no idea why he wants something as mundane as an Identify scroll back, but she'll get it to him. "It'll be no trouble."

*

It didn't take her long walking along the flower gardens to locate Tethtoril, and he was quite pleased with his robes. He added to her gold collection and gave her Firebead's scroll right away. She tucked it under her arm and marched right back to the Inn, where she walked it back to Firebead.

"You have done well." He says, smiling, and hands her a handful of gold coins.

"You don't have to pay me, really."

"Consider it a gift then." He says. "For a safe journey."

She smiles, "Thank you, Firebead."

Firebead Elvenhair sits facing the fireplace. His mouth is covered by his knarled hands and his eyes stare darkly into the fire, narrowed, focused, as if the flames had done something they would not live to regret.

Heh, he is not related to Jaheira, then?

Phoenix remains still, watching him, studying every line on his face, wishing that she could look that impressive, that imposing. She will attempt to master that scowl later. When she is older, that scowl will be turned on disobediant students.

Hm? Is she going to become a teacher?

How old is she, exactly?

Oh, the sense of humor is such a subtle thing... :D

"she will make sure that he is well paid" - you know, considering that the girl is a necromancer, and the fellow will be killed by doppelgangers, it sounds rather omnious.

"Concider it a gift then." He says. "For a safe journey."

She smiles, "Thank you, Firebead."

Safe journey? That's what I call a sense of humor! ;) :D

Nah. Just having one of those moments.

Hm? Is she going to become a teacher?

:D Oops. I meant apprentices. She wants to be a big powerful mage with a dark forboding tower and a small legion of tamed apprentices. I'll edit it. :D

How old is she, exactly?

She's 11...she thinks she's nearly an adult. He's been visiting and helping her learn since she was six, so she sort of slips into the 6 year old mode naturally with him, but tries to act older. You'll notice a difference between how she acts with Gorion and Firebead and how she treats everyone else.

Oh, the sense of humor is such a subtle thing...

It can be... but she's not even trying to get it. As far as she knows of, Necromancers are not renowned for their sense of humor.

"she will make sure that he is well paid" - you know, considering that the girl is a necromancer, and the fellow will be killed by doppelgangers, it sounds rather omnious.

I wanted to make sure you knew her intentions going in. Right now, she has a plan for her life: instead of the standard "find Mr. Right, settle down in a house and raise children" option, she's decided to go with a slightly different option, "Become a force to be reckoned with, settle down in a tower and train an army of young apprentices." And when she is a force to be reckoned with, she will make sure that those who contributed to her when she was weak and ugly will be well rewarded. (Not that she thinks she'll get any better looking, but when she gets wrinkles to go with that gray hair it won't be so bad, she thinks) She has no intention of leaving anyone behind. She certainly has no intention of having everyone who loved her or helped her killed off. These are things that are going to make her veeerrry angry...

Safe journey? That's what I call a sense of humor!

Oh, they always hope. At least mine won't be guilt ridden by how long it takes her to be ready- mine starts out at night- and all the errand running takes a very short time- even being attacked by assassins. :D

'gnarled'

Bit hard to manage that look at her age, yes. :)

Heh, I really like her way of putting that. Should be 'its' corpse, btw.

Well, she *is* very serious, after all. :)
Rogues do it from behind.

I'll fix it! Thanks.

Oh, it doesn't take her too long to get a pretty close approximation.

Yup. Imoen is sure she's a little stick in the mud. Of course Phoenix and Imoen may have played together, but they don't really know each other that much at this point.

I suspect he means the two-legged kind of rats.

I like the twist Phoenix puts on that proverb, very characteristic.

typo: should be consider

Rather sad chapter when you know how that journey will turn out.

Yes. I wanted to show how she acts towards people she respects before you find out how she acts to just anyone.

Firebead talked to Gorion, he knows she isn't coming back, but he can't tell her. She thinks she's just going out to meet some of Gorion's old friends. She thinks the bandits won't bother with the two of them and that when she gets there, the most hazardous thing she's going to have to put up with is small talk. ;)

Her actions are misleading, one moment she's like an adult, the next an eger child. So much is in store for her. It makes one wonder.

Phoenix is a child. She has more intelligence than 99 percent of the people around her...and is more perceptive, attentive and disciplined than many of them as well, (other than the monks) so at the moment, there are very few adults that have her respect. Those that do get more of her effort than the others. Of course, she does take Gorion for granted. He's always been there, and she thinks he always will.
