Family and Friends:

Elshana clutched at the hand of her father. They were going somewhere else, he said, somewhere where there would be other children like her. That sounded like it would be fun.

“Ada?”

“Hum? Ah, what is it, Elshana?” He smiled down at her with those nice eyes. Some people didn't have nice eyes. They just stared, and whispered about her, and some people even had angry eyes. They didn't like her.

“Where're we going 'gain?”

“It's called Candlekeep.”

“What's there?” Elshana asked.

“Lots of things.” Father answered. “But I am meeting some of my friends nearby first, alright.”

“Alright.” Elshana liked meeting her father's friends. They normally were nice, and many of them were wizards, or heroes, or clerics. They would tell her stories about the monsters they had seen. Elshana believed them all. “Do I know them?”

“No, child,” he said with a shake of his head. “But I think you might like them. I have known them for a long time.”

“Oh.” The young half-elf said. “Okay.”

Gorion led her into an inn. There were lots of noisy people, but Elshana's attention was focused strictly on her father as he led the way, still holding her hand.

“Here we are.” He led her up a flight of stairs, and knocked on the wooden door of a room. Elshana strained her ears to catch the footsteps of the new people she was going to meet, but there weren't any.

“There's no one in there, Ada,” She said. He liked it when she called him Ada. It meant father in elvish. Elshana was half-elf, and so that was important.

“Hum . . I wonder.” Her father was talking to himself again. He always did that when he was thinking about things. He opened the door and stepped into the room.

Elshana stared at the sword that lay carelessly tossed on the bed, still in it's sheath. “Ada – look!”

He sighed. “Yes, Elshana, it's a sword. But I wonder where --”

“Come here. Now!” It was a woman's voice.

“Nyah! No, gotta catch me!” Elshana tilted her head. That was another child's voice, and it sounded like she was having fun.

“Child, come here right now, or --”

“Jaheira?” her father asked.

“I swear, if you don't – Gorion?”

He smiled. Elshana pulled her arm free of her father's grip and stared at the new woman. She was tall, with long brown hair and tilted eyes the colour of the nuts in fall.

“Gorion. Perhaps you know what to do with – with --” Someone darted out from behind a bookcase. The woman reached to grab that someone, missed, and the someone spun around.

“Silly, you gotta catch me.” In spinning, she backed right into a tall man.

“T-there you are, little r-rascal!”

“Khalid!” The someone cried, wrapping her arms around the tall man. He didn't seem to know quite what to do. Silly, Elshana thought, give her a hug.

“I thought I told you to stay in the room, Imoen.”

Imoen sighed. “It's boring.” She stuck her tongue out at the tall woman.

“There is someone here to meet you, Imoen.”

Imoen stuck her tongue out again. “I know, silly. You told me. Lotsa times before.”

“No, he is here. Imoen, this is Gorion.”

“Oh.” She let go of Khalid's leg and stared at Father. “Hi!” Then she saw Elshana. “Hi!”

“Hi.” Elshana gave her a smile.

“Elshana, this is Imoen. She's going to be staying with us.”

“Like a sister?” Elshana asked. This was going to be exciting. All the heroes had brothers and sisters.

“A sister?” Imoen said, her grin still big. “I get to stay with you, Mr. G.?”

The woman looked all scared. “Imoen – what do you mean by --” she stopped. Ada was laughing.

“I have never been called that before.” He said, still laughing. Khalid was smiling too. Elshana frowned. What was so funny?

“But it's ok, right? You're not mad, are you?” Imoen looked really sad. Don't say you're mad, Ada, Elshana thought, I know you're not . . .

“No, I'm not mad.”

“Yeay!” Imoen ran forward and wrapped her arms around his waist. “So I get to come with you now?”

“If you want.”

“Yeay!”

The tall woman sighed. “You'll have your hands full with her, Gorion.”

“I think I can manage, Jaheira.” He sounded happy. That was always good.

“Bye Khalid.” Imoen actually looked sad. “I won't get to hear the rest of the story.”

“I – I'll tell you the rest the n-next time I see you. A-Alright?”

“Uh huh.” Imoen wrapped her arms around him as he gave her a hug.

“Bye Jaheira.” Imoen stuck her tongue out at the tall woman and grinned. “You're very silly, y'know that?”

Jaheira smiled. It was a pretty smile, but it didn't last long. “Gorion, are you sure you want to --”

“Quite sure.” Father said. “And thank you for watching Imoen for me.”

“Y-You're more then welcome, Gorion.” Khalid flashed Imoen a grin, and got one in return.

Jaheira scowled. “We had better be off, no? Dermin will not be happy if I am late.”

Khalid sighed, running his fingers through his hair, but he had a smile on his face “R-right as usual, my d-dear.”

“Bye!” Imoen called, as they went into the room.

“Thank you!” Father said as they left.

Father turned to the two of them. “Since it is late, we will stay here tonight, alright?”

Elshana nodded, but Imoen made a face. “It's boring here. There's nothing to do, and Jaheira's stories were all about flowers and birds.”

“I think I can come up with a few stories.” Father said. “Provided you don't run off on me.”

“No flowers, ok?”

Now it was Elshana's turn to laugh. “No, flowers are boring. But he'll tell you about the evil wizard. . .”

“Yeah!” Imoen took Elshana's other hand. Then she looked at the half-elf. “Is pink your favorite colour too?”
