Anomen looked at himself in the mirror.

It had been just as Branwen had said it would be, he knew his successful graduation from Warhammer of the Red Knight to Knight of Tempus. But it was one thing to know it; another to see it.

He had some idea what was happening, of course, when he had felt the Lady guide him to the helm and shield of scarlet back in Firkraag's Dungeon. But even then her presence had slowly been fading from his mind and the God of Battles had begun to exert his own influence.

The party had come back to Athkatla and seen the Dwarven smith, Cromwell. The Dwarf had lovingly taken the scarlet scales from his hands and begun to hammer them together for what was a reasonable price.

Now he stood in front of a long mirror in one of the better rooms in the Copper Coronet, staring into the full length mirror. He no longer needed to follow the Red Knight; now he *was* a red knight. A knight of Tempus.

He took a deep breath and took the red knight pendant off and put it in a box; they would send it back by courier to the Keep. He did not yet have the sigil of Tempus, but as he had found his other gear, he was sure that too would come, and it was a mere formality.

Anomen was finally a Knight.

Sir Anomen went downstairs to join the party.

----

Adrian had spent that same day paying the right beauracrat the right bribe. The Windspear Hills were now legally his.

He had also taken the time to visit Bhodi. As expected, the ship had not yet arrived, but she assured him it was on it's way. That was fine with him, as he wanted to ask her a particular favor without Anomen present. The vampiress had nodded in agreement. She herself would not be able to take care of it, as she would be accompanying them to Spellhold; but she would direct Drayven and several others of her followers to attend to it on the night of their departure.

With all that done he had rejoined the party in the Coronet just as Anomen was coming down the stairs as a Knight for the first time.

"Can you find the others again?" He asked without premable.

Anomen nodded. "Easily enough. We should be able to start tonight, when the slavers are sleeping. Sir Ryan told me enough before to know which house it is." The Knight's mouth twisted. "I should've known all along, it was obvious enough. Their estate is *right behind* the Order Hall."

Adrian clapped him on the shoulder. "We seldom see those unpleasant truths closest to us." He said. Anomen blinked, then nodded. Without another word the Knight slipped out into the city, to find his old friends once more.

----

So it was that midnight had arrived, a crisp clear starry night. Anomen rejoined the party outside the slaver compound, and his old friends were with him.

Blaine, Tanya and Krath fell into formation and stared up at the rich slaver mansion.

"This is just the beginning," breathed Tanya. "We have to take on the Order itself after this."

"Won't be easy," grunted Krath.

"We can handle it," said Blaine.

"One thing at a time, my friends," Anomen said.

"Indeed," agreed Adrian. "First the slavers themselves. Then their allies within the Order. After that...well, we shall see."

They entered through the front door, and found to their dismay that at least two of the slavers were not asleep; a mage in ornate robes and a woman in thick theiving leathers turned in startlement.

"Wha? The wards have weakened enough to let the rabble in!" The mage exclaimed.

"What do you fools thing you're doing here?" The woman sneered.

Anomen stepped forward, hammer heavy in his hand. "It is time to pay for your crimes."

The slavers exchanged a knowing smirk, then the mage teleported himself and his companion away in a flash.

The party advanced slowly, cautiously, looking for traps. There weren't. Instead, there was something much worse.

A gate flashed into reality in the large, well furnished room. A gate to the lower planes. A great rift seemed to form in the floor, and a demon clawed it's way out, eyes blazing, wings spread, claws and talons long and sharp.

Other, lesser monsters appeared as well, summoned by the enemy from a safe distance. Adrian and Anomen exchanged a weary glance, and led the party in a charge....

Hi!

Anomen was finally a Knight.

Yeay!

Sorry. I happen to be an Anomen fan.

Their estate is *right behind* the Order Hall."

Adrian clapped him on the shoulder. "We seldom see those unpleasant truths closest to us." He said. Anomen blinked, then nodded.

Owch. Too true.

Wha? The wards have weakened enough to let the rabble in!" The mage exclaimed.

I remember this encounter. You've used it in the whole mess with the order, huh? Good idea.

Awesome sight! I'm very happy for him.

Mmmm...finally! He surely deserves this.

Aye...Adrian has a good point there, I think. It is far easier to look for evil far from home.
Rogues do it from behind.

Well, it's about time... I guess...

Ah, yes, I remember this lot from a story you did a LONG time ago.

Other, lesser monsters appeared as well, summoned by the enemy from a safe distance. Adrian and Anomen exchanged a weary glance, and led the party in a charge....

Go, Anomen! I think Tempus is a perfect god for CN Ano. As you may recall, that was what he was (for a while) in my story, too.

I do remember; you inspired me. Though Oryx subsequently inspired the details of exatly *how* it would happen.
