Livin’ on a Prayer—Part I

*************************************************************

Viconia set off for the planar sphere, and Soris struggled to keep up. They walked in silence for a time as she attempted to make sense of what she was about to say. What is wrong? I have done everything, everything. She burned with frustration and anger. She didn’t understand. He didn’t understand. She had desires. She had needs. Why doesn’t he understand?

Soris walked along beside his lover. He knew something was wrong. He thought he knew what she wanted, but like the amulet, it was not something he could give her, not yet. He gently reached for the amulet and then snatched his hand back. The amulet was burning hot. He didn’t understand.

Unbeknownst to any of the party members four dark figures stalked silently towards the sphere. They arrived at the sphere in time to see three figures enter. None were the one they hunted. The dark ones settles down to wait, eyes of black fire gleamed coldly in the darkness, eyes of purest dark. Out of the pools of darkness one set of eyes glowed with a piercing blood red light. They waited and watched.

Viconia suddenly felt Soris tense. “Your back?” She sort of snapped the question. She forced the exasperated look from her eyes, but she knew he had seen it. He feigned a weak smile.

“I think I overdid it a little at Cromwell’s forge earlier.”

Under different circumstances, she might have smiled at his weak attempt at humor, but she didn’t now. They came to a small park, really nothing more than a secluded grassy area. She sat him down and began to massage his back. She watched carefully as he slowly began to relax…

Soris felt the tension slowly ebb from his body, and he marveled at the strength and skill of Viconia’s fingers as she kneaded the muscles in his back. He honestly didn’t know what he would do without her. When she finished, he rolled around so that he could look up at her from his position on the ground. The starlight glinted off her hair, and it seemed to take on a life of its own. The sight of it filled him with both longing and regret. He wished he could go back to the way he had been before, but he couldn’t. He needed more now, and he didn’t know how to make her understand that. He gently lifted his hand, allowing his fingers to caress her cheek. She drew closer. He heard her whisper. Her words were an echo of what she had said the first time they had lain together.

“I…have a need, Soris. A need that must be fulfilled…I must feel your strength within me and around me.”

He hadn’t been able to refuse her then, and he didn’t think he could do so now, even though he knew that what she wanted was not the best for either of them.

He pushed himself to a sitting position and gently took her had, pulling her into his arms. “I will stay with you tonight, and do my best to fulfill your need. I don’t know if I can anymore, but I will try.”

To his surprise, he felt her muscles stiffen. She shoved him back and stood up. “I wasn’t looking for your pity or your sympathy. I need your strength.” Her eyes blazed. He hated seeing her anger. He felt his own rise. She didn’t understand what he offered.

“I’m giving you everything I can. Don’t you think this relationship, us,” He gestured, “means anything to me?” He practically screamed the words at her.

She bent down, placing her face mere inches from his own. “If it truly means as much as you say it does, then you would understand.”

Her words bit, leaving a stinging feeling behind. Soris’ mind flailed for something else to say. He couldn’t find anything. He looked away. When he looked back, he saw the swirl of Viconia’s cloak as she walked off into the night.

He dragged himself to his feet and grabbed his staff. I’m not letting you go. Not this time, not without a fight. He too stalked off into the night.

All the while, cold eyes waited and watched for the Drow and the sorcerer to return. The night was young.

We've got to hold on to what we've got
'Cause it doesn't make a difference
If we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot
For love - we'll give it a shot

We're half way there
Livin' on a prayer
Take my hand and we'll make it - I swear
Livin' on a prayer

We've got to hold on ready or not
You live for the fight when it's all that you've got
