Greetings,

The Attic first started as the Silvermoon's Attic, when I invited Silvermoon to become the first host. And a fine job of that she did, too, hosting more quizzes than anyone else at the Attic did to date.

Those were small quizzes at first. Back in those days, it actually deserved to be called a quiz, even if no winners were named and no prizes given. The host asked to write something on the subject, and then commented on every answer. There weren't too many back then.

Actually, it all started with Bethphel's Diary, an online Baldur's Gate novel that I wrote, quite unexpectedly for myself. While it was still far from conclusion, an idea came to me to both popularize it and draw other people to the fine art of writing fan fiction by organizing a collaborative project, Sword Coast Party. It was to be a Baldur's Gate novel, whose chapters would all be written by different authors.

The project did not last (the fate that also befell its Planescape: Torment based twin, Tormented Party). Yet while it was underway, I thought a section of the Sword Coast Party website devoted to a roleplaying and writing advice would go a long way to helping all the participants. Of course, it had to be someone experienced to give advice, and so I asked Silvermoon, for her many decades of AD&D roleplaying experience could not be overlooked.

Well, she said, and what form would that take? I didn't have an immediate answer, but we thought about it and came up with the idea of weekly quizzes. She decided to call it the Silvermoon's Attic, and it has been called an Attic ever since.
