My view of X-Bow in a nutshell.

Good X-Bow templates

Well it just depends on what you wanna do with your character and how much magic you want to rely on. How important is creature to you or mana conversion? Also do you plan to be in a group or mostly solo? I consider fletching to be mandatory on my archers. If I'm going on a hunt with pre-fletched quarrels I can only take a few hundred, with fletching I can take several thousand! This combined with several packs of mana stones can make for very few trips to town. If you start with a really high strength consider going Gharu, if not go Aluvian.

My differences to what Kellin suggest are this:

1. Specing X-Bow - Creatures in general have a lot lower missile defense than they do melee or magic d. Get some coord jewelry and some x-bow gloves, you'll hit just fine and rock things hard. I was hitting olthoi at level 20 from a perch for great damage. =)

2. Problem with Low Focus - Long time to level 6's...Kellin what level will you be / are when you can cast 6's reliably? Also having a good starting focus sure helps the arcane lore, fletching and other skills.

Generalist X-bow

60/20/100/80/60/10

Spec: Nothing
Train: X-Bow, Fletch, Life, Item, Melee D, Arcane Lore, Healing
Take: Creature @9, Mana C @ 20 & whatever you want after that.

This is a fairly easy template to play and gives you all 3 schools and mana c at a low level. Problem area for this one is about levels 20 to 28 as you desperately try to push up your Melee d and lore to get level IV's. Alysen is a modified generalist x-bow (took lockpick @start will get healing @40). Good thing about this is your template finishs fast and can get non-essential skills like leadership @32 or lockpick @40.

Tank X-Bow

?/10/100/100/?/10

For the remainder, what ever your preference between str and focus. Strength for more carrying capacity (or staff for Gharu), focus for higher level spells and lore items at lower levels.

Spec: Melee D, Arcane Lore
Train: X-Bow, Fletching, Healing, Item
Take: Life @16, Mana C @ 32

This one is going to rock in a group with a support mage, but not as self sufficient as the generalist. You're going to do better against non casters at a lower level than the generalist. Creature???....isn't going to happen. Kellins' template is similiar to this. This one starts rolling good in the late 20's. The lack of critter is gonna hurt you in learning and casting new spell levels. If you decide to spec X-Bow as well its really going to take a lot from your magic.

Mage with a X-Bow

10/10/100/10/100/100

Spec: X-Bow, Life, Arcane Lore
Train: Fletching, Item
Take: Mana C @ 7, Creature @20

Basically you are a mage, you just kill with your x-bow rather than war magic. Although I have seen several bow people play a similiar template, I've never seen a X-bow character like this. Just basically threw it in as food for thought. Seems to me like way to much wand wiggling in combat, but some may prefer it. This character would be the ultimate "perch" archer. With the speced life he could land his own vulns very effectively. Early levels for this one will be extremely rough without some help.

Starting Out

How to do it in our allegiance =)

Equipment:

No matter which template you are playing (unless you don't take fletching). Here is what you need assuming you take my advice on 1st place to hunt:

Mandatory:

1 Faran Robe with hood (It just looks better than the noob clothes) =)
1 140 mod X-Bow - Pester Kellin for this =)
As many Arrowheads and quarrel shafts as you can carry without being overburdened.
Just say NO to armor at this point, no matter how overburdened someones mule is. =)
Learn the reload slide before you go. =)

Optional:

Explorer Coordination Bracelet
Low Level X-Bow mastery gloves
Mana stones
normal fire and lightning arrowheads
components for spells - have someone bring these to you on your 1st reload

Places to hunt:

This path is assuming you just want level - get a high level mage escort and get out to the Ring Fort. Stay there till 15th but preferrably 20th. At 20th you'll be able to do the citadel or metos fellowing with others, if you try this at 15th you better have your own support mage. You'll need to have someone ferry supplies to you a few times. You can make 10th easily on the stuff you take out with you when you initially go. Get your x-bow and melee d to at least 160 and lore to 90 while you are there. Also get your magic schools up to level III's. 1st thing you need to do there is to pump up your stamina, you'll be doing a lot of firing and always at high accuracy.

When you get through with the ring fort, head to the meeting hall at Hebian-To. Take some burden off of everyones mules =) and pickup some decent leather armor and level III jewelry (or low diff IV if you can find it). Unless you have your own trade mule you'll start visiting here regularly for mule support. IE Greater Quarrels and Hearty Healing Famous Pizza's! (Those pizza's have saved my butt more times than I can count! Hope Cookmule has some made up I'm almost out. =)

Iron Golems and Lugies will level you till you are ready to hunt bugs, then apes. =)

Thats my view in a nutshell, Kellin though has much more experience with it that I do. In the end you have to make your own decision about what works best for you.
