Adrian: Baldur's Gate

Chapter 15.

They passed through Nashkel the next morning, on the way to the mines. Adrian briefly considered stopping in the temple to get that tome identified, but decided against it. He had dragged his feet too much already regarding the mines. Xzar and Montaron were getting twitchy again.

Edwin admitted to being curious about just what, exactly, was going on here. "It makes no sense for them to poison their own supply of necessary metals," he said. Adrian agreed. He would have liked to know, though, wether it had anything to do with Gorion's death.

They tromped through town at speed and continued southwards, following the trail.

Clink clink, clink clink.

"Beauteous creature," whispered the man making the noise, by knocking a small hammer against a cliff face. "You are my masterpiece!"

Adrian could see the opening to the mine excavation in the middle distance, as the trees thinned out around them and the grass became barren. But now there was this strange fellow.

"What are you doing?" Adrian asked him.

"Composing a statue to my one love, the beauty Ellesime."

Deciding to leave the harmless screwball alone, Adrian turned to leave.

"None cross Greywolf and live!"

A man not unlike himself in height and build, though with more grey in his hair, came marching down towards them from the east. "I have come for you Prism, and all those that protect you!"

"We're just passing through--" Adrian began.

"Stupid cullys," sighed Greywolf. "Lying to the greatest bounty hunter that ever lived. You will die for this."

"Greatest?" Adrian sneered. He had no wish to interrupt a fellow bounty hunter in his business, unless of course he was the target himself, but the man's attitude and presumption had irritated him.

Their blades clashed, and Adrian was glad he had taken that magical sword from the foolish Amnian noble, for Greywolf's own dark blade was clearly a powerful magic weapon itself. The others closed in on Greywolf, thrusting and stabbing, save Xzar. Even Edwin was there, thrusting with his staff, the one Adrian had taken from Silke. Adrian approved; they'd need their spells for the mines.

Dodging a slash from Greywolf, he stepped back and threw his new spell at the man, weakening him. This enabled Kagain to step into the breach and endure Greywolf's attacks with his fast healing, and allowed Adrian to bring his crossbow up.

Greywolf was tough, but eventually Viconia's mace cracked his skull..

Adrian took the man's powerful dark sword as his own, giving the one from the Amnian noble to Montaron.

They reached the entrance to the mines....only to find Khalid, Jaheira, Imoen and Branwen waiting for them there.
