LVI. Annals of House Delryn

[An attached note states: The original of this document may be found within the records of the Order of the Most Radiant Heart.]

Unto Sir Agelmarnus, Historian of the Order of the Most Radiant Heart, greetings:

I submit unto your hands the required account of my adventures in the region of the Windspear Hills. I am certain that Sir Keldorn Firecam and Sir Waleis Angroumeit have already presented you and the Prelate with an overview of our meeting with the party of our Waterdhavian brethren, so I shall continue the narrative from the point at which my party once more resumed our quest for the dryad queen.

The lands we now entered bore a less smiling aspect than those we had previously traversed. Though a goodly number of streams ran through the area, the vegetation seemed sparse and thin, possibly as a consequence of the dragon’s activities. Boo was certain that Firkraag had a lair somewhere in the vicinity. The only sizeable trees were found in small clusters here and there. Ranger Minsc noted a paucity of animal life; we saw few animals larger than a squirrel for most of the morning, and this was consistent with the Order’s teachings about the wantonly destructive habits of evil dragons.

We proceeded with great caution through the denuded area, as the others deemed it wiser to avoid a confrontation with the dragon in our ill-prepared state. Towards midday we found that the terrain once more bore the aspect of healthy wilderland. Bearing somewhat eastward, we entered a forest so dense we were forced to dismount and lead our horses. After wandering in this manner some time we began to discern a sort of tableland rising above the trees. We set our course towards this landmark, and soon came to a steep cliff. Minsc searched about for a bit and eventually located a very rough path ascending the slope.

Lady Patricia, Lady Nalia, and Minsc were delegated to make the first ascent. Lady Patricia insisted that the ranger remove his plate mail for a scout’s lighter leather jerkin, in view of the dangerous route. They appeared to have little trouble negotiating the stony trail, and reached the top in approximately ten minutes. About half an hour later, they reappeared at the top of the cliff, indicating by a prearranged signal that all was well.

When they rejoined the group, they reported that they had located one Vaelasa, Queen of the dryads of the area, and Patricia had delivered the acorns entrusted to her by three of the Queen’s subjects. Vaelasa had then been able to summon the dryads away from their place of imprisonment, saving their lives. Their acorns will be planted in order to provide them with new trees.

Once our companion had fulfilled her promise, we perceived no further necessity to remain within the area. Boo strongly recommended that we return to Athkatla and report our discovery to the proper authorities, and the rest of us concurred with his assessment. It remains to you, my superiors, to determine what action to take against this dread evil that has been discovered within our borders. For my part, I would be proud to be accorded the honor of serving in any capacity on any expedition that might be mounted to rid the land of this most foul creature, whose machinations have caused so much destruction within our borders.

In service to the Great Guard and the cause of Right,
				Squire Anomen Delryn
